African Spear Sansevieria

African spear plants prefer bright, filtered light, but the plants are highly light-tolerant.

The plant can survive long periods of drought. Water it monthly or less in winter; water it weekly or every other week in summer, depending on temperature levels.

Feed the plant during the growing season. Do not feed it during winter.

Sansevierias contain saponins as natural insecticides and fungicides. These saponins are toxic for living beings and cause gastronomical reactions such as vomiting or diarrhea in humans and animals when ingested. Moreover, the juices of the plant cause dermatitis, a form of skin rash or irritation.

The Sansevieria purifies air by absorbing toxins through the leaves and producing pure oxygen. In fact, the Sansevieria is an ideal bedroom plant. Whereas most other plants release carbon dioxide at night (in the absence of photosynthesis), the Sansevieria continues to produce oxygen.
